In all of Europe, few landscapes inspire as much as the Scottish Highlands. Rugged in their natural beauty, this most un-spoilt region of the United Kingdom is something to behold. Towering mountains, serene lakes and stunning valleys all roll into one, and taking in these epic sights from the comfort of a luxury train is one of life’s great pleasures, as such it’s no surprise The Highland Journey is one of the most popular offered by the Belmond Royal Scotsman.
Day 1
Arrive at Edinburgh Waverley station to find the Belmond Royal Scotsman waiting for you to climb aboard. Departing early-afternoon, once settled in you will pass through the former Kingdom of Fife, a beautiful area in itself, before hitting the jaw-dropping vistas of the Highlands-proper. Once into the evening, dinner will be served, followed by entertainment in the Observation Car, and then finally an overnight in the Boat of Garten.
Day 2
Wake to enjoy a fabulous breakfast before hopping on a coach to the Rothiemurchus Estate in the heart of the Cairngorns National Park- easily one of Britain’s most majestic landscapes, where you can enjoy clay-pigeon shooting, fishing or a tour of the grounds.
Head back to the train for lunch whilst travelling on to the Culloden Battlefield, where a private tour will be organised. In the evening, we visit the Strathisla Distillery, amongst the oldest still to be working and most prestigious, to enjoy one of Scotland’s best whiskies, then board the train once more to take in fabulous panoramic views as you head south through Aberdeenshire and Angus, partaking in a formal dinner en route to Dundee.
Day 3
Rise and shine to find yourself making a way through yet more incredible Scottish scenery. Enjoy an elegant breakfast on board as Dundee fades into the distance and Edinburgh approaches, pulling into the Scottish capital mid-morning.
